After spending most of the day in my room working on the teen home we’re opening soon, and avoiding Wolf, I’m getting antsy. So, I decide food is in order, and since Lorena isn’t here, it’s up to me.

Also, I’m hungry, and what better distraction from the drama in my life right now than cooking a meal? Since Rafe has passed out on my couch, Kir is now my babysitter. He follows me to the kitchen, then hops up on a counter.

“Phew, I’m glad we got outta there. You don’t seem like the type to sit quietly, and honestly, it was torture watching you do it.” A smile lights his face.

He grabs a bag of chips from the counter next to him and digs in. Legs swinging, he chows on them like he hasn’t a care in the world.

“Look, I’m not a fool. I know when to follow orders, even if I’ve never been in the military.” I search the fridge and pantry, noting ingredients and planning a meal. “There’s a time and place for me to lose my shit, and trust me, it’s coming. In the meantime, I cook.”

I chuckle awkwardly, trying to lighten the tense mood I created.

“I’m hungry. What’s for supper?”

Kir goes for petulance with his bottom lip stuck out. It really just reads as adorable.

“Beef Wellington with a red-wine sauce, garlic mash, honey-braised baby carrots, and homemade rolls.” I glance up. “If you’re nice to me, I might even whip up a peach cobbler for dessert.”

I toss him a wink.

Shock lights his eyes and he sputters out, “You can cook?”

“Your shock is offensive, you know.”

Kir’s eyes widen. “No, sorry, what I meant was…it’s an involved dish, and …yeah, I guess I didn’t expect you to be able to cook.”

“No worries, cutie, I won’t poison your food.” I pat his leg and try to appear innocent; he probably knows better. “Others, though, they would be smart to worry.”

I give him a deadpan look to mess with him, and by the uncertainty on his face, it works.

“Shit, I’ll do whatever it takes to stay on your good side. Damn, calm down with the death threats.” Kir jumps down from the countertop. “Okay, princess, how can I help?”

“You can start with why you call me princess,” I ask with genuine curiosity, preparing the rolls. “And you can help by staying out of the way.” I cover them, so they can rise while I mince garlic.

“Well, I’ve heard a lot about you from Rafe and Vicente for the last eight years. With Vicente, it was always mi princesita this and mi princesita that. It kind of stuck with me, so it’s the name I think of you by.”

“Hmm, I thought it was you implying I’m a spoiled princess.” I set the knife down and gaze at Kir for a moment. “I want to thank you. You really helped me out on my birthday with the Wolf situation and again last night. I sincerely appreciate it.” My voice is barely above a whisper.
